A Straunge & Terrible Wunder - reproduction Black Shuck Woodcut of 1577

In 1577 a pamphlet was produced telling of a terrible phantom hound who burst into a church in Norfolk, killing parishioners and leaving fiery claw marks gouged into the church door thst can still be seen to this day.

The pamphlet known as ‘A Straunge & Terrible Wunder’ was a sensation and its fame has lasted to this day, as have some preserved copies of the print itself.

what has not been preserved is the fantastic hand carved wooden print block that was meticulously cut to print this pamphlet.

So I decided to cut my own. Using a solid block of magnolia wood, I gave faithfully cut the title and Black Shuck himself and used this block to print a series of woodcut prints onto handmade Himalayan paper, to give the look and feel of aged parchment.

This print is on A4 sized paper for easy framing.
